The formal scientific name for the cannabis plant, first classified by carl Linnaeus in 1753. Sativa means cultivated in Latin. Modern taxonomy recognizes only this single species which encompasses all of hemp, high-THC cannabis, and autoflowering cannabis plants. While ‘sativa’ is colloquially associated with tall, narrow-leafed, varieties with uplifting effects, modern genetic research has not supported this distinction.
