The female parent in the breeding process. It is selected for its desirable genetic traits, such as potency, yield, flavor, or resistance to pests and diseases. When a breeder crosses the mother plant with a male plant (which provides pollen), the goal is to create new hybrid varieties that inherit the best characteristics of both parents. The mother plant contributes 50% of the genetic material to the resulting seeds.
