Cannabinoids in the Varin homolog series share a 3-carbon alkyl side chain rather than the standard 5-carbon side chain. The Varin series is one of several naturally occurring homolog series produced in trace amounts by the cannabis plant. Members of this series include THCV and THCVa, CBDV and CBDVa, CBGV and CBGVa, CBCV and CBCVa, and CBV. The shorter chain produces significantly altered pharmacological effects rather than weaker versions of the same cannabinoids. THCV for example, in some cases acts as a CB1 antagonist, blocking the receptor from activation, which is directly responsible for the appetite suppressant effects associated with THCV. Some African sativa landraces have shown elevated concentrations of the varin series cannabinoids.
