Cannabinoids in the Butyl series share a 4-carbon alkyl side chain rather than the standard 5-carbon side chain. The Butyl series is one of several naturally occurring homolog series produced in trace amounts by the cannabis plant. The shorter chain alters the ways these cannabinoids interact with receptors. Currently these include THCB and CBDB, which were both discovered by Italian researchers in 2019, though THCBa had been identified as far back as 1942. The exact pathway for formation of these unique trace compounds has not been found yet but remains an active area of study.
