The process of applying heat to cannabis to convert cannabinoid acids, like THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and CBDa (cannabidiolic acid), into their active forms—THC and CBD. This is necessary because the raw, unheated cannabinoids found in fresh cannabis are not psychoactive. Decarboxylation activates these compounds, making them more potent and effective for both recreational and medicinal use. Acids are defined in chemistry by a Carboxyl group side chain, when heated the compounds lose their carboxyl group making them no longer an acid, hence decarboxylation

In the Wild — Example

Decarboxylation is what happens automatically when you light a joint. The heat converts THCA to THC instantly.
