Abbreviation for Tetrahydrocannabivarin. The varin homolog of THC, possessing a 3-carbon side chain rather than the standard 5-carbon side chain. THCV is typically found in small amounts in cannabis but is more concentrated in certain strains, especially some African Sativa strains. THCV is known for producing uniquely different effects depending on dosage level. At low doses it acts as a CB1 antagonist, actually blocking the receptor, which is believed to contribute to the compounds appetite suppression effects and ability to moderate the effects of THC. At higher doses it becomes mildly psychoactive which users report as a cleaner and more functional than THC. It is being studied for its possible role in weight management, metabolic health, and diabetes care. A 2024 study found THCV improved fasting glucose and blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients.
